Why Is Aeration Used In Lawn Care?

Many people are familiar with the practice of lawn aeration - we’ve all seen lawns poked full of holes, cylindrical clumps of dirt scattered throughout. But while you may be able to recognize that aeration has taken place, you may not know the reasons behind this important aspect of lawn care. As the name implies, aeration allows for air to reach the roots of your grass. Water and nutrients are also delivered to the roots, allowing them to grow strong and deep.

You’ve probably seen aeration done on large lawns that are subject to high volumes of traffic. The schools and sports fields of Fort Collins are two examples. Lawns of newly-built homes are another example. Aeration is primarily designed to alleviate the effects of soil compaction caused by heavy traffic. Constant pressure and impact from above lead to compression of the soil, which means there is less space for water, nutrients, and air to penetrate down to the roots. By removing small amounts of soil at regularly-spaced intervals, the remaining dirt has room to spread out horizontally. This creates a lower soil density, allowing roots to receive the nutrition they need to support a lush, healthy lawn.
